Backing the Bid for the 2018 Gay Games

Caroline recently gave her full support to London's bid to host the 2018 Gay Games when she attended a parliamentary reception launching the campaign. Joining her in supporting the bid were Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire and the Minister for Women and Equalities, and Stephen Gilbert, Liberal Democrat MP for St Austell and Newquay.

Explaining why she is supporting the bid Caroline said:

"The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were an immense success. The organisation, sporting infrastructure, transport system and most importantly the welcome provided by Londoners were factors that all received international acclaim. These important factors, combined with the incredible diversity and inclusive nature of London, will help ensure the 2018 Gay Games obtain similar levels of success.

Cable car fares need an overhaul

Commenting on figures that showed the Thames cable car having its lowest ever usage in the week ending 15th December, Caroline Pidgeon commented:

"It is normal practice for a new transport link to experience a growing number of passengers as people find out about the route and start using it on a regular basis.

"The Thames cable car is totally bucking the trend with its passenger figures seeing a consistent downward trend.

Save Downham fire station

The Mayor's plans to close 12 fire stations, which is more than one in ten of London's fire stations, have been strongly opposed by Liberal Democrats across London.

A petition to the Mayor against the closure of Downham fire station in south Lewisham has already gathered more than 4,300 signatures.

The petition, which has been organised by Lewisham Liberal Democrat councillors, was presented to Assembly Members Caroline Pidgeon and Stephen Knight by Councillors Chris Maines, Julia Fletcher and local campaigner Janet Hurst. The Lib Dem team have now presented this to the Mayor through the Fire Authority.

Turn Bricklayers' Arms flyover into a park

The London SE1 website reports on Caroline Pidgeon's suggestion to the mayor to turn the Bricklayers' Arms flyover in Southwark into an elevated park like New York's High Line.

Boris Johnson has said that Transport for London have no plans to close the flyover to traffic, but has asked TfL to review ways of reducing the environmental impact of the flyover.
