Find alternatives to stop Jubilee Line closures dragging into 2015

Caroline Pidgeon, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on reports today that Transport for London plan to shut the Jubilee Line for more than 30 days through central London due to acidic water eating into the tunnels walls, said:

"Instead of over 18 months of repeated weekend and holiday closures I question whether one intensive block closure perhaps in August would be both cheaper and less disruptive.

Action in Camden

Caroline visited Camden Borough on Friday 12th April to see first hand local issues that are of concern to local communities and local Lib Dem Councillors.

Caroline started her visit looking at the potential impact of HS2 near Camden Town and the very busy and potentially dangerous main roads for cyclists and pedestrians with Councillors Chris Naylor, Paul Braithwaite and Keith Moffit. (Read more here in the Camden New Journal. Caroline is working with a cross party group of members of the House of Lords looking at a potential alternative for the London end of HS2 which would not have such a damaging impact in Camden around Euston and on the London Overground service.

Caroline then went to visit Belsize Fire Station, one of the 12 under threat of closure by Conservative Mayor Boris Johnson. Caroline spoke with local councillor Tom Simon and local residents about their safety concerns

Government must take opportunity to fund Gospel Oak-Barking electrification

The London Assembly’s Transport Committee has heard from Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, about the next opportunity for funding the electrification of the Gospel Oak-Barking line.

No details were provided in last month’s Budget, despite an announcement delivering £3 billion a year on infrastructure, but his letter suggests that the proposal may be reconsidered in the next spending round in June.

Chancellor urged to fund Gospel Oak to Barking line electrification

The London Assembly’s Transport Committee has written to George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, to urge him to fund the proposed electrification of the Gospel Oak to Barking railway line.

Electrification of the line would bring significant improvements for both freight and passenger traffic, including reduced overcrowding for passengers, improved connectivity with the rest of London’s rail network, environmental benefits and the ability to run longer trains on the line.

Save our London neighbourhood policing

The London Assembly today urged Mayor Boris Johnson to halt his plans to dilute police Safer Neighbourhood Teams and recklessly close police front counters across London.

The Assembly's motion calls on the Mayor to retain the existing neighbourhood policing model of a dedicated sergeant, supported by two Constables and three Police Community Support Officers, allocated to each ward in London.

Caroline Pidgeon AM, who seconded the motion, said:

“Londoners value their local police stations and the local, recognisable police teams dedicated to serving their ward. Shutting up cop shops to public access and destroying the local policing model risks setting policing back more than a decade and separating the police from their communities.”

Mayor should admit he is decimating Safer Neigbourhood Teams

Caroline Pidgeon AM, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on the Mayor’s response today to her questions about the future of Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) across London, where he failed to recognise that there would be a reduction in dedicated police officers for each safer neighbourhood team, said:

“The Mayor should come clean with Londoners and admit that he is decimating the current and successful model for safer neighbourhood teams.

"Gearing Up" proposals are a big positive step for King's Cross

The King's Cross Environment blog has a report on the London Assembly Transport Committee's report "Gearing Up", and what its proposals could mean for cycling safety around King's Cross.

On first reading it’s a report that appears not to pull its punches. Clear in its message that London needs to take action and fast. It’s timely too. Right now Transport for London is consulting on the changes it will propose to the road system in King’s Cross. This report certainly appears to summarise the vast majority of changes our community has wanted for many, many years and more. Importantly it includes a very clear and highly appropriate timetable against which the Mayor and TfL should report progress

Out and about in Camden

Caroline joined Assembly Candidate Chris Richards, Camden Lib Dem Councillors and activists, and Brian Paddick in Camden for some campaigning on Saturday.

The team were joined by a large group of Dutch colleagues over to help!

Campaigning in Camden Town and Primrose Hill

Caroline joined local campaigner Chris Richards, who is standing to be the local councillor for Camden Town and Primrose Hill on 3rd May, as well as our local Assembly Candidate looking at issues in the area. The team were shocked to see so much dumped rubbish on the streets, which Labour Camden are clearly not dealing with effectively.

“We had a good evening talking to local people about their concerns in the Camden Town area” commented Caroline. Nick Russell, the Lib Dem's local London Assembly candidate, also joined the team door knocking.
