The design for the Rotherhithe-Canary Wharf bridge has to be chosen transparently

Caroline Pidgeon has written to the top lawyer at Transport for London, describing her growing concerns at the lack of openness in the design and procurement process, and asking him to investigate.

Specifically, Caroline raised the issues that:

  • A "bascule" design - where the bridge would open and close like Tower Bridge - has been ruled out without clear reasons, despite being supported by transport charity Sustrans in an independent report

Campaigning in snowy Southwark

As the snow rolled into Southwark on 26th Feb, Caroline and Southwark Lib Dem deputy leader Damien O'Brien put on their warm clothes to go out campaigning for the local elections.

Visit My Mosque Day

Caroline Pidgeon, Southwark Lib Dem leader Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, and London Lib Dem chair Chris Maines visited Old Kent Road Mosque for the nationwide Visit My Mosque Day on 18th February.

"The atmosphere was really great, and it was wonderful to support this important day", said Caroline.

Cycling vision is under funding pressure

Caroline Pidgeon joined other London Assembly Transport Committee members, and the mayor's cycling commissioner Will Norman, to tour central London's cycling infrastructure on two wheels and see at first hand conditions for the cycling public.

Caroline said:

"The Mayor clearly has a vision for cycling, but it may face pressure from Transport for London’s squeezed budget following central government cuts, the fare freeze and falling revenue from commercial activities."

Save the RV1 bus

Caroline Pidgeon has joined local campaigners in Southwark in calling for the RV1 bus to run every 10 minutes again, after a recent cut left it running just three times an hour.

Caroline said:

“Before the Mayoral election Sadiq Khan promised that “as the son of a bus driver” he would be the champion of our buses.

On the beat with East Dulwich police

As part of the "Walk The Met" initiative, Caroline spent time with East Dulwich police officers Simon and Tricia learning about life in frontline policing, especially the stretch on the police over the Christmas period.

Improving bus services in Rotherhithe

Caroline and local Lib Dem councillor Daniel Whitehead met TfL at Canada Water to discuss how bus services in Rotherhithe can be improved.

Specifically, TfL are planning:

  • Increased frequency on the C10 and 381 from April 2018
  • The C10 route to use electric buses from 2019, reducing air pollution
  • Investigating increased bus capacity around the Rotherhithe peninsula at peak times
