Gospel Oak to Barking: stop letting travellers down by passing the buck

Speaking to City AM, Caroline described her frustration at the poor service on the Gospel Oak to Barking line, and the repeated delays in introducing electric trains to replace the unreliable diesel trains that currently run.

"Users of this line have been badly let down.

"The continual excuses and passing of the buck between TfL, Network Rail and the train manufacturer are a perfect case study of everything that is wrong with our railway industry.

Crossrail's non-standard platforms will be a burden to disabled people

Caroline talked to Rail magazine about the frustrating Crossrail platform design which will leave disabled people unable to get onto trains step-free at suburban stations.

The new platforms at central stations have been built 20cm higher than the standard, which will leave an upwards step for passengers who board trains at the existing stations on the east and west of the route.

Charity Commission needs to properly investigate the Garden Bridge trustees

Caroline has urged the Charity Commission to fully investigate whether the trustees of the Garden Bridge project properly met their duty of care, after the cancelled project wasted £46m of public money.

Caroline said:

The Charity Commission claims its hands are largely tied, yet there is now clear legal advice that the trustees might have breached their duty to act with reasonable skill and care.

Why Heathrow deserves a more thorough debate

Writing for Liberal Democrat Voice, Caroline points out that the issues around the third runway at Heathrow have not been properly discussed, and that the campaign against it needs to go on.

So let’s be absolutely clear, despite the thumping vote in favour of a third Heathrow runway the arguments against a third Heathrow have not been addressed

Many of the arguments in favour are outdated, most notably the obsession with hub airports.

Enforced upgrade to Dial-a-Ride is very welcome

Caroline welcomed the news that the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone will force Transport for London will to finally replace the old buses that make up most of the Dial-a-Ride service.

Caroline told MayorWatch:

“Having so many Dial-a-Ride vehicles which are 15, 16 and even 17 years old clearly indicates that there has not been sustained investment in the Dial-a-Ride service.

Westminster Council is tinkering at the edges on Oxford Street

Caroline Pidgeon has criticised Westminster Council's plans to go it alone with a watered-down plan for Oxford Street, rather than fully pedestrianising it.

Caroline said:

“For a long time Westminster City Council had a constructive working relationship with TfL. Suddenly they think that they alone can transform Oxford Street.

Mayor should use his power to ensure Oxford Street pedestrianisation happens

Caroline Pidgeon has given her strong support to the motion the London Assembly passed, calling for the Mayor to ensure the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street goes ahead, using his emergency powers if needed to overrule Westminster council.

Caroline said:

"Oxford Street will quite frankly die as a global destination for shopping if it does not adapt.

The mayor needs to roll up his sleeves and tackle TfL's excessive payouts

Caroline Pidgeon has challenged Sadiq Khan to take a seat on Transport for London's remuneration committee and take ownership of preventing issues like the £50m spent on severance payments to departing staff last year.

Unlike the previous mayors, he has refused to join the committee.

Caroline said:

“The mayor of London is ultimately in charge of Transport for London yet Sadiq Khan has adopted a strange trick of distancing himself from the organisation when it conveniently suits his political needs.
