TfL must take urgent action on Rotherhithe gridlock

Liberal Democrats at three levels of government have come together to ask Transport for London to take urgent action on the gridlock at Rotherhithe roundabout.

Borough councillors, Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes and London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon AM have joined forces to call for an end to the heavy congestion around Rotherhithe Tunnel, including changes to the road layout and roundabout.

It follows a meeting held last week at City Hall at which Lib Dems said the only way to tackle daily congestion on Jamaica Road is for Transport for London to get to the heart of the trouble and make changes to the layout of the roads.

TfL have agreed to look at the roundabout – however Liberal Democrat campaigners are demanding urgent action to ease the problems now.

They also say that the whole area needs a rethink, particularly with plans for the next Cycle Superhighway going through the roundabout.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Eliza Mann (Riverside ward) said:

"We are pleased that TfL are finally looking at this junction. They have to prioritise this as people are fed up with being stuck in traffic every afternoon."

Councillor Wilma Nelson (Rotherhithe ward) added:

"TfL need to review the road but also need to look beyond this at other aspects such as where the bus stops are placed. Residents should not have to put up with gridlock."
