Fresh thinking on fares is now needed

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on today’s London Assembly Transport Committee report which recommends that the Mayor and TfL examine new fare and ticket options, including a part-time travelcard, said:

"The Mayor needs to recognise that fresh thinking on fares is needed.

"Already 900,000 people in London work part-time. It is time that the Mayor faced up to the fact that the fare structure can’t remain fixed around working practices that for many people disappeared years ago. People who work part-time or regularly from home should not be penalised, but that is what in practice happens with the current rigid fare structure.

"As well as the wider benefit of part-time travelcards, ‘early bird’ cheaper fares could be a far better way of managing demand on our increasingly crowded buses."
