The key cycle safety statistic that the Mayor must focus on

Caroline Pidgeon AM, leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on the Mayor’s comments today about improving cycle safety in the capital said:

"I very much welcome TfL’s initiatives to ensure there are better designed lorries on London’s roads.

“TfL has immense purchasing power and anything it can do to improve the design of lorries has my total support.

“However, I remain concerned about the Mayor’s repeated use of selective statistics on road safety. It is also disturbing that the Mayor seems incapable of just admitting that fundamental mistakes have been made with the design of large sections of the existing Barclays Cycle Superhighways.

“Instead of selectively adopting statistics I suggest the Mayor remains focused on addressing one fundamental statistic – that in the UK a person cycling is three and half times more likely to be killed than if they were cycling in the Netherlands.”
