Mayor’s 2014 fare rises will hit the weakest the hardest

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting ahead of fare rises that will be introduced across the whole of the Transport for London network from 19th January, said:

“Thankfully the Mayor was forced to back down on his initial proposals to hike up travelcards above the rate of inflation.

“However even after the Mayor’s u-turn many Londoners will struggle with these fare rises. The latest fare rises which come on top of the huge hike in fares introduced by the Mayor since 2008 will hit the weakest the hardest.

“His fare rises above all penalise Londoners who work part-time or who work from home on a regular basis.

“It is time that the Mayor recognised the huge growth in people working part-time and ensured that the fare structure no longer penalises them. The Mayor’s failure to understand the merits of a travelcard designed for part-time workers is an insult to hundreds of thousands of Londoners.”
