Crossrail 2 station needed at Essex Road

Plans for a possible new underground line through Islington have been welcomed by local Liberal Democrats, but questions are being asked about a promised station that appears to have vanished off the map.

The Crossrail 2 project would create a new line between north-east and south-west London with faster journey times and improved transport connections and relieve overcrowded existing lines. The scheme will also
create jobs and regenerate areas.

Crossrail 2 replaces previous proposals for a Chelsea-Hackney line with two stations in Islington at Angel and Essex Road. Two options for the Crossrail 2 route have now been put forward but neither of them includes a station at Essex Road.

Local Liberal Democrat Paula Belford, said:

"It's great news that a new tube line could be coming to Islington.

"The Victoria, Northern and First Capital Connect lines are often overcrowded as are the local buses running along Essex Road. This situation will only get worse as the population in Islington and London booms in the next twenty years.

"But it seems that Canonbury and Essex Road have suddenly dropped off the map. It was always planned to have a station at Essex Road on this line, but now it has vanished into thin air.

"Canonbury residents shouldn't have to get on already overloaded buses to the Angel to pick up Crossrail 2 when it is running under their homes. We need to get Transport for London to go back to their original plan for a station at Essex Road."
