Simon Hughes MP has taken to the streets to hear what local businesses have to say about extending the Bakerloo line down Old Kent Road.
The Bermondsey MP was joined by London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon and Lib Dem council group leader Cllr Anood Al-Samerai on Tuesday for a ‘walkabout’ along the road to discuss proposals for new tube stations in the area.
The trio stopped off at a number of small businesses to chat about the plans, which they say were “100% supported” by shopkeepers and residents they spoke to along the way.
As part of his campaign to get TfL to make progress on the proposals, Mr Hughes was also giving out campaign posters for shop windows along the route.
Current plans by TfL suggest an extension of the Bakerloo line beyond Elephant & Castle through Old Kent Road and on to New Cross and Lewisham. Simon Hughes is leading a campaign to also get a second branch going southwards through Walworth, Camberwell and Peckham.

Commenting afterwards, Simon Hughes MP said:
“The proposal for a Bakerloo extension down Old Kent Road was 100% supported by all the local businesses I spoke to. The general consensus was that two new stations are needed along Old Kent Road: one at the Bricklayer’s Arms roundabout, and one further south. Not only would this bring extra transport links for residents, it would also give a huge economic boost to the area.”
“I am urging all local residents and businesses who back an extension of the line to put their weight behind it by signing the petition on my website. With enough local support behind it, we can finally make happen.”
