Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, has responded to Transport for London’s consultation on the extension of the Bakerloo Line highlighting the vital need for a two-branch extension of the line.
Welcoming the consultation, Caroline Pidgeon said:
“I am delighted that this consultation has received so much attention and that due to the active work of MPs such as Simon Hughes so many people have responded. It is vital that the voices of people from South East London are heard.
“For too long the South East has been poorly served by the Underground network and while recent improvements such as the Docklands Light Railway and London Overground are welcome there is nothing like an area being on the Tube, especially areas such as the Old Kent Road and Camberwell which rely on buses.
“An extension to the Bakerloo Line would deliver direct and speedy transport to central London and at the same time bring immense regeneration opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people living in Southwark, Lewisham and other parts of South East London. Extending the tube would bring new jobs, help support local businesses and transform the work opportunities for a huge number of people.”

Highlighting why a two branch extension is so important and should be considered by Transport for London, Caroline Pidgeon said:
“A two branch extension of the Bakerloo might seem ambitious, but it actually makes a great deal of sense, especially in ensuring there is full use made of the spare capacity that currently exists on the central section of the line.
“Alongside this, consideration must be given to a new rail station being built at Camberwell on the existing line between Loughborough Junction and Elephant and Castle. ”
