Victory for Twickenham residents as footbridge is saved

Caroline Pidgeon has congratulated Twickenham MP’s Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat ward councillors and local residents for ensuring that Transport for London have abandoned their plans to remove a footbridge over the A316 Chertsey Road.

When TfL’s plans were first announced last June they met with huge outrage.

However, after an extensive local campaign and a massive response from local residents to the TfL consultation, it has been decided to keep the bridge for at least two years.

Since June Caroline has also helped to support the campaign, through presenting a petition to TfL and facilitating two meetings at City Hall with TfL officers.

The change in policy was finally confirmed by TfL to the local MP Vince Cable at a meeting held on the 12th January. After the meeting, which he initiated with TfL, he said:

“We have had a big victory here - they have agreed to keep the bridge and install a crossing as well. They are also going to put in a bit of money to bring it up to standards.

"In a few years time they will have a look at how regularly it is being used and go from there.”
