New thinking on Oxford Street is long overdue

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Liberal Democrat London Assembly transport spokesperson, commenting on reports that Transport for London are now considering removing buses from Oxford Street said:

“Transport for London’s new thinking of Oxford Street is long overdue. The case for pedestrianising Oxord Street has never been stronger.

“Oxford Street is currently one of the most dangerous roads in the UK. One person is knocked down by traffic on Oxford Street every five days. The diesel fuelled buses and taxis that stutter along it have produced the highest known concentrations of nitrogen dioxide anywhere in the world.

“Putting the pedestrian first is the key to the long term success of Oxford Street.”
