Caroline Pidgeon welcomes start of consultation on Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf crossing

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member, has welcomed the news that a consultation is now underway on a dedicated pedestrian and cycling route across the Thames linking Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf.

Caroline Pidgeon has a long record of backing a pedestrian and cycling bridge and during the 2016 mayoral elections, Sadiq Khan even admitted at the London Cycling Campaign hustings that he had stolen the idea from Caroline.

Caroline Pidgeon said:

“The case for the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf pedestrian and cycle bridge has never been stronger. It will play a vital role in supporting new housing and employment that is growing on both sides of the Thames. It will also help to reduce pressure on the Jubilee Line, especially at Canada Water which repeatedly faces excessive levels of overcrowding.

“It is vital that this bridge is built and I urge Londoners to take part in this consultation.

“The Mayor should also be pushing forward with plans to extend the cycle hire scheme right through to Rotherhithe. The combination of these two policies would help to reduce congestion and air pollution and at the same time dramatically improve travel options for many people, especially in south east London.”
