No grounds for complacency over transport crime

Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on the Mayor welcoming the latest crime figures for London’s transport network, said:

“The Mayor should not be complacent with these latest figures. Across the whole of London’s transport network there has been no uniform fall in crime – indeed in some areas levels have increased, and in some cases by a significant degree.

“On the Underground and Docklands Light Railway there has been an increase in four different types of crime, including a staggering 50% increase in theft of railway property and burglary. The rise in the number of robberies is also very worrying.”

“It is worth noting that in more than one third of London boroughs the level of crime on buses has also risen, with very significant increases in places such as Barking and Dagenham, Tower Hamlets, Hammersmith and Merton.”

The BBC has also covered these figures, highlighting the 48% rise in thefts of railway property on the Tube and DLR.
