Mayor must review 20mph limit on London roads

The London Assembly has called on Mayor Boris Johnson to take action on road safety by introducing more 20mph limits on the capital’s roads. The Assembly asked him to set stricter limits – where appropriate – on the London Road Network (TLRN), following calls from councils, schools, pedestrian groups and cycling organisations, and to require TfL to provide evidence to justify its position when it rejects a Borough’s application to reduce a road’s speed limit.

The Mayor’s recent road safety action plan recognised that 20mph speed limits can improve road safety and the liveability of town centres.

Caroline Pidgeon AM, who seconded the motion, said:

"Strong measures need to be taken to improve road safety in London. Reviewing speed limits on our major roads, as proposed by this Motion, is an important start. As a half of all pedestrian deaths in London are within 30mph zones, the Mayor and TfL must help Boroughs to introduce more 20mph limits where appropriate as this could significantly reduce the number of pedestrians killed each year."

Caroline also met a campaign group from Elephant & Castle calling for 20mph limits in the area. Read more on the London SE1 website.
