Croydon pedestrian crossings not safe for visually impaired people

The Inside Croydon blog reports that - as discovered from figures that Caroline Pidgeon forced Transport for London to publish - seven pedestrian crossings in the borough do not meet the minimum requirements for visually impaired people to be safe:

  • Brighton Road at Old Lodge Lane fire station
  • On the Purley Way at Epsom Road
  • Brighton Road at Bartlett Street and Nottingham Road
  • St James Road and Sydenham Road
  • Whitehorse Road by St James Road and Spurgeons Bridge
  • Purley Way at Foxley Lane and Pampisford Road

Reopening of former Eurostar platform at Waterloo is a welcome step

Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport spokesperson, today welcomed the announcement by Transport Secretary Justine Greening MP that passengers on some lines serving commuters on a number of the busiest rail routes from south west London into Waterloo are set to benefit from extra carriages to ease overcrowding, and that one platform at the former Waterloo International Station is to be reopened for commuter services.

Boxing Day tube strike is the last thing London needs

Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on the High Court ruling confirming that a tube strike will go ahead on Boxing Day said:

"This strike is unwelcome as it will harm London's retailers, disrupt numerous Boxing Day events and lead to more cars on London's roads - it is the last thing London needs.

"Londoners who are just days away from being hit by large tube fare rises will find it hard to understand why this strike is really necessary."

Scrutinising the Mayor on cycling safety

2011 has seen far too many cycle accidents and deaths on our roads.

River Thames is a great opportunity for transport

The River Thames is a forgotten highway, a tube line effectively, across the centre of London and yet under-resourced in terms of transport.

In January, the London Assembly Transport Committee is looking into river transport services - so Caroline and other Committee members spent a chilly morning in early December out and about on the river with Thames Clippers from Putney to Erith, looking at the challenges and opportunities to really expand river transport services for Londoners.

In memory of 16 cyclists

Caroline Pidgeon AM joined London Cycling Campaign, cyclists, pedestrians and family members of the 16 cyclists who have died on London’s roads in 2011 at a vigil at King’s Cross on Tuesday 20th December.

Mark Ames, who writes the ibikelondon blog, spoke of the tragic cycle deaths and serious collisions on our roads as well as those pedestrians who have been injured or died.

Time has come for cheap early morning fares

Welcoming the Mayor's indications that he will finally consider fare reductions for journeys in the very early morning, Caroline Pidgeon - who has long argued for this - said:

"London's economy is reliant on an underpaid army of workers, from cleaners to security staff, who get to work before most people have even got out of bed.

"Now more than ever London's lowest paid workers need a helping hand and one small step would be to introduce lower fares for people who travel to work before the rush hour starts.

Vigil to remember cyclist's tragic death in Southwark

Caroline Pidgeon AM and Simon Hughes MP joined local residents and councillors in a vigil on the evening of 14th December, in memory of Ellie Carey, a cyclist who died in a collision with a lorry at the corner of Abbey Street and Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey.

Simon Hughes called for an end to the "carnage that shouldn't be" due to unacceptable danger cyclists face on London streets - which Caroline Pidgeon is continuing to fight for action on in the London Assembly.

Publish London’s most dangerous roads for cyclists

Speaking as the London Assembly voted for a motion asking TfL to publish details of London's most dangerous road junctions for cyclists, and to review how to make each one safe, Caroline Pidgeon said:

“Every death on our roads is a tragedy for the families concerned, but one which could be avoided by designing a better junction is a stain on our transport system. We owe it to all Londoners to ensure every sinew is strained to make cycling in London as safe and pleasant a way to travel as it can and should be.”
