Helplines for those suffering from domestic abuse during the crisis

Thanks to the Met for providing this list of helpline numbers for those suffering from domestic abuse. Please share these widely:

  • The 24/7 National Domestic Abuse helpline, which offers support to victims and people affected by domestic abuse, is free to call on 0808 2000 247.
  • The Respect Phoneline provides confidential advice and support to help perpetrators stop being violent and abusive, and is free to call on 0808 8024040.

Bus safety measures are welcome, but more needs to be done

Caroline talked to ITV News's Simon Harris about the importance of keeping our bus drivers and passengers safe during the coronavirus crisis.

Welcome further measures are being introduced to ensure that our brave and dedicated bus drivers are as safe as possible whilst carrying out their essential roles, but there is still more that can and must be done.

Police custody and bail during the COVID-19 crisis

Caroline Pidgeon has written to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner to understand the force's plans to keep police officers, staff, detainees and the public safe during the COVID-19 crisis.

Caroline wrote:

There will be many across London who have concerns over the custody environment and the safety of officers, staff and detainees when it comes to the possible transmission of COVID-19 in these environments.

When home is a place of danger

Writing for Liberal Democrat Voice, Caroline discusses the increased risk to domestic violence victims in a time when there are restrictions on leaving home.

So what can be done?

Well to start with, at a national level we need a significant and immediate increase in funding for support services for victims of domestic violence. Local authorities have always struggled to provide adequate services, so any initiative to quickly tackle the rising problem must come from central government.

Supporting domestic abuse victims during this difficult time

For many people home can be a place of danger, rather than a place of safety. At Mayor's Question Time, Caroline asked the Mayor how we can ensure support for those suffering domestic violence and abuse during this difficult time, where lots of people are having to spend more time at home.
