Mayor and TfL should ensure the trains run on a very special weekend

Londoners and visitors are facing heavy travel disruption on the city's biggest weekend of the year - due to engineering work on the Tube and Overground, as well as the rail strike.

Caroline Pidgeon criticised the Mayor and Transport for London for the poor timing, and urged them to rethink:

“The weekend of 19 and 20 May will be a very special weekend for the capital, with a London team in the FA Cup Final and many people coming to London to take part in events across the capital celebrating the royal wedding.

The Mayor hasn't listened properly to RV1 bus users

The Mayor has refused to reverse the cuts to the RV1 bus service, which have left users with just three buses per hour - despite having spent £1 million on two new hydrogen-powered buses for the route just weeks before!

Caroline Pidgeon expressed the disappointment and frustration of local passengers:

"I welcome TfL at least admitting that it was unacceptable to suddenly cut in half the frequency of the RV1 without giving advance notice to customers and stakeholders.

The design for the Rotherhithe-Canary Wharf bridge has to be chosen transparently

Caroline Pidgeon has written to the top lawyer at Transport for London, describing her growing concerns at the lack of openness in the design and procurement process, and asking him to investigate.

Specifically, Caroline raised the issues that:

  • A "bascule" design - where the bridge would open and close like Tower Bridge - has been ruled out without clear reasons, despite being supported by transport charity Sustrans in an independent report

Cycling vision is under funding pressure

Caroline Pidgeon joined other London Assembly Transport Committee members, and the mayor's cycling commissioner Will Norman, to tour central London's cycling infrastructure on two wheels and see at first hand conditions for the cycling public.

Caroline said:

"The Mayor clearly has a vision for cycling, but it may face pressure from Transport for London’s squeezed budget following central government cuts, the fare freeze and falling revenue from commercial activities."

Save the RV1 bus

Caroline Pidgeon has joined local campaigners in Southwark in calling for the RV1 bus to run every 10 minutes again, after a recent cut left it running just three times an hour.

Caroline said:

“Before the Mayoral election Sadiq Khan promised that “as the son of a bus driver” he would be the champion of our buses.

No Overground on Boxing Day is a big disappointment

The lack of an Overground service for Boxing Day to match the Tube, despite hints earlier in the year, is a real disappointment for those who depend on the Overground lines, said Caroline Pidgeon as she questioned the Mayor on the topic.

Caroline told MayorWatch:

“Sadiq Khan likes to boast about the start of the London Overground night service but he cannot hide away from the fact Londoners have long been promised a Boxing Day service on the London Overground.

Unofficial statements about London Plan need to be questioned

Writing at the MayorWatch website, Caroline Pidgeon cautions that the Mayor's office is sending out press releases about a London Plan that is in the drafting process and will not be completed until autumn 2019.

Caroline asks the media to ask critical questions about what they read:

"For a start, all the media reports in the last week have been based on a document that has not even been published until today."

Shocking figures reveal the true impact of moped crime in London

The increasing problem of crime committed by moped riders has been highlighted in figures obtained by the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Caroline Pidgeon.

Following her questioning of the Mayor, figures have been released showing that in just nine months there have been 17,606 ‘moped enabled’ crimes in London.

The figures reveal that moped raiders are affecting every London Borough, although the crimes at present are heavily dominant in Camden, Islington and Westminster.

Commenting on the latest figures, Caroline Pidgeon said:
