Victory for Twickenham residents as footbridge is saved

Caroline Pidgeon has congratulated Twickenham MP’s Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat ward councillors and local residents for ensuring that Transport for London have abandoned their plans to remove a footbridge over the A316 Chertsey Road.

When TfL’s plans were first announced last June they met with huge outrage.

However, after an extensive local campaign and a massive response from local residents to the TfL consultation, it has been decided to keep the bridge for at least two years.

The tube is delayed 170 times a year due to overcrowding

As a Freedom of Information request revealed that the Tube averages 170 delays per year due to overcrowding, Caroline Pidgeon told the LondonLovesBusiness website:

“While there has been some reduction in Tube delays in the last few years it is a real concern that delays caused by overcrowded trains remain so high, especially on the Jubilee Line.

“These figures provide a powerful case for further increasing the frequency of trains on this line in particular.”

The Mayor needs to decide - is the cable car is a tourist attraction or public transport?

Caroline Pidgeon AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, commenting on news that the cable car appears to have no regular commuters, following a freedom of information request made by Darryl Chamberlain of the 853 blog, said:

"It is amazing that the cable car had no regular customers during a recent week in October.

“The cable car should either be run as a tourist attraction or alternatively as an integral form of public transport, where people with a relevant travelcard can travel for free and an Oyster Pay As You Go fare should be the same as a single bus fare.

Taking on TfL over transport closures at popular events

City AM reports on Caroline Pidgeon's efforts to challenge the Mayor and TfL on recent issues where transport facilities have been closed down and impeded the public from visiting busy events - particularly the poppy exhibition at the Tower of London, and the England vs Germany women's football at Wembley.

Mayor to consider Rotherhithe–Canary Wharf cycling bridge proposal

At Mayor's Question Time last week, Caroline Pidgeon expressed her support for a cycling bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf - which would increase cycling, provide an alternative to the congested Jubilee line, and provide a river crossing where it is really needed.

The Mayor has agreed to review proposals for the "Brunel Bridge" by sustainable transport advocacy group Sustrans.

Stop rewarding failed contractors

On behalf of the London Assembly Transport Committee which she chairs, Caroline Pidgeon has criticised Transport for London's decision to pay £80m to Bombardier Transport on terminating a contract which Bombardier had failed to deliver on.

Caroline said:

"How is it possible that Bombardier's woeful failure to deliver was rewarded with a fat cheque?

TfL's excuses for sweltering buses are more hot air

As a Freedom of Information request revealed that temperatures on the Mayor's "new Routemaster" buses can reach 34 degrees Celsius - above the legal limit even for transporting livestock - Caroline Pidgeon told the politics.co.uk website:

"Pretending that there is not a problem with the new bus for London is simply not an option for the Mayor and TfL.

Concerns about the Garden Bridge

In a Guardian article by Rowan Moore, Caroline Pidgeon discusses some concerns about the project to build a Garden Bridge from Temple to the South Bank:

Silencing the Waterloo Tannoy will make it inaccessible to the blind

As South West Trains plans a trial of silencing Tannoy announcements at Waterloo station, Caroline Pidgeon expressed her strong opposition to a plan that will make travel much harder for passengers with visual disabilities.

“This is one of the most absurd decisions by a train company I have ever come across. Visual and audible announcements are vital... and it would be a scandal if such an important station as Waterloo was made inaccessible to any of its passengers.”
