Action on Walworth Road dangerous junction

Caroline joined local residents and police officers from Newington Ward, West Walworth, last week to review the junction of the Walworth Road with Penrose Street with Southwark Council traffic officers.

As part of the improvements to the Walworth Road, an 'all phase crossing' has been introduced to allow pedestrians to cross whichever way they want to at Penrose Street, East Street and Walworth Road. However, before the ‘green man’ cycle starts, vehicles can turn right into the Walworth Road from Penrose Street, and pedestrians often forget this and have already started to cross the Walworth Road by East Street Market, making it dangerous.

“We had a good discussion about the purpose of the new scheme and how we could tweak it to make it safer for all road users. Officers have agreed to look at moving the bus stops near Boots further along, to stop buses backing up over the crossing and to see if any new road markings or signage can be installed” said Lib Dem London Transport Spokesperson Caroline Pidgeon.
