Mayor accepts that Sutton’s “appalling” lack of public transport is a strong case for the Tramlink extension

At City Hall the new Mayor of London was grilled by the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon over his level of support for extending Tramlink to Sutton.

In responding to her questions the Mayor stated he backed the scheme and was ‘keen to get Tramlink extended.” He also admitted that Sutton has an “appalling” lack of public transport and that for too long transport connections to Sutton have been neglected.

The Mayor also accepted Caroline Pidgeon’s request to come to Sutton to visit the location of the proposed world-leading cancer research hub at the Marsden Hospital, which the extension of Tramlink would help deliver.

Following her questioning of the Mayor Caroline Pidgeon said:

“It is obviously very early days for the new Mayor but it is encouraging that he is already on record as firmly backing the extension of Tramlink to Sutton. Most importantly he seems to understand the vital reasons it is so necessary.

“However turning warm words into actions is what really matters.

“I will not hesitate to hold him to account for the pledges he has now made.”
