Standing against anti-Uighur persecution and Sinophobia

In the London Assembly, Caroline Pidgeon has spoken out against the Chinese Government’s appalling actions against the Uighur Muslims, and about the need to tackle growing hate crime against Chinese and British Chinese individuals in London.

"The appalling persecution of the Uighur Muslims by the Chinese government requires us all to take a stand.

"I agree with Alistair Carmichael MP, who's done much work on the plight of the Uighur Muslims in China, who suggests that the government should also take actions on imports from China, especially on things like surveillance equipment.

"I also condemn the increase we've all seen in hate crimes against Chinese and British Chinese individuals in London, and across the UK, and we've seen that increasing over recent months. Those of Chinese heritage have contributed and continue to contribute a huge amount to our city, and for them to be targeted in this way is completely unacceptable and goes against London's reputation as a global diverse and welcoming city.

"A targeted campaign against Sinophobia will be an important part of showing those of Chinese heritage that they and their contribution to our city are valued."
