Universal Basic Income can make London better, more equal and more productive

As the London Assembly approved Caroline Pidgeon and Siân Berry's motion calling for London to trial Universal Basic Income, Caroline said:

"I'm delighted this motion pushing for a UBI trial in London has passed today!

"We've seen during the pandemic how fragile many people's financial circumstances are, especially in London where even before COVID-19 close to a third of people lived in poverty. With many falling through the gaps during the pandemic it's clearer than ever that our welfare system doesn't work effectively enough.

"If a UBI had been in place before COVID-19 it would have provided automatic essential income top-ups for those who really needed it. Ensuring people have money to spend and are not living hand to mouth doesn't just benefit them, but everyone.

"The knowledge of a secure income will also open up opportunities to those who can't currently explore or consider the careers they want. Creating an environment in which Londoners can consider the best way they can contribute to the economy, rather than being tied down due to economic pressure, is something we should strive towards - it will make our city a better, more equal and more productive place."
