Concern over poor bus services in Camberwell and Peckham

On Friday 7th January Caroline met with local residents, the Chair of the Transport Committee and Transport for London officers to discuss the poor transport services to many people in the Southampton Way area of Camberwell, currently served by the 343 bus route.

Under plans by the Lib Dems and the previous Mayor a Cross River Tram would have come through the area to Peckham, providing a really fast, green and accessible form of transport to central London. Boris Johnson cancelled this project and has not provided any decent replacement transport since, even though the area has seen an increase in residents following new developments.

"We had a really useful meeting with local residents who made their case very clearly to TfL. In particular members of the Evolution Quarter Residents’ Association have worked hard to pull together figures and data proving the need for more transport in the area" said Caroline.

Suggestions made have been to extend the 168 route from Tesco on the Old Kent Road to Peckham via Wells Way and Southampton Way and/or to extend the 148 route along Southampton Way to Peckham instead of finishing at Camberwell Green, as well as to look at the options for an express bus route or a shuttle bus.

TfL officers agreed to go and look at the suggestion in more detail.
