Mayor’s meddling on aviation is helping no one

Caroline Pidgeon, Leader of the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group, speaking ahead of the Mayor’s seminar on the “need” for increased aviation capacity in London and the South East, said:

"Boris Johnson's position on airports is full of contradictions. He opposed the expansion of City Airport in his election, yet once in office he has been happy to support its substantial expansion. He has also spent the last two years backing the fantasy idea of an airport in the Thames Estuary - uniting every council and environmental group against him.

“The Mayor of London has no power to build or finance airports, but nevertheless he can’t stop meddling on this topic. His apparent desire to support increased air traffic noise and disturbance on Londoners and people in the South East never seems to go away.

“The coalition government has firmly ruled out any expansion of airports in London and the South East. The Mayor should now do exactly the same thing and focus on the transport system in London that he does run!”

The Telegraph also has a blog article by Andrew Gilligan - a journalist who is often supportive of the Mayor - challenging the case for the estuary airport.
