Bus safety measures are welcome, but more needs to be done

Caroline talked to ITV News's Simon Harris about the importance of keeping our bus drivers and passengers safe during the coronavirus crisis.

Welcome further measures are being introduced to ensure that our brave and dedicated bus drivers are as safe as possible whilst carrying out their essential roles, but there is still more that can and must be done.

When home is a place of danger

Writing for Liberal Democrat Voice, Caroline discusses the increased risk to domestic violence victims in a time when there are restrictions on leaving home.

So what can be done?

Well to start with, at a national level we need a significant and immediate increase in funding for support services for victims of domestic violence. Local authorities have always struggled to provide adequate services, so any initiative to quickly tackle the rising problem must come from central government.

The Prime Minister needs to be transparent in the funding he declares

As the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards launched an inquiry into the funding of Boris Johnson's Caribbean holiday, Caroline Pidgeon told the Guardian:

“The prime minister clearly has form in terms of what he chooses to declare, which goes against all practice in public life.

Elected politicians need to go above and beyond the letter of the law to be transparent.”

Silvertown Tunnel contracts will now be made public - but the Mayor must do so before the election

Following pressure from Caroline Pidgeon in the London Assembly, the Mayor has now committed to make public the details of the contracts to build the £1bn Silvertown Tunnel.

Caroline commented:

"It is simply incredible that the £1bn project is going ahead, when we should be spending much more on cycling and pedestrian transport infrastructure.

"The Mayor needs to release the contracts for the Silvertown Tunnel, as promised, before the London elections."

Why is the police watchdog taking so long over the Johnson-Arcuri investigation?

Caroline Pidgeon described the frustration of London Assembly members that they cannot start investigating the relationship between Jennifer Arcuri and Boris Johnson while he was Mayor, because the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been deliberating since September on whether to launch its own investigation.
