London Liberal Youth mount campaign to save the Cross River Tram

Caroline was delighted to join members of the London Liberal Youth at LSE on Thursday 27th November to discuss the Cross River Tram and their campaign to try to persuade the Mayor of London to change his mind and keep the plans alive.

The team of students have produced leaflets and posters and are planning a number of events and different levels of lobbying to keep the pressure on the Mayor to save the tram.

“I was very impressed to meet such an enthusiastic and energetic student group, who strongly felt the tram would benefit the student community in London as well as the wider community, in many deprived areas.

Action on Walworth Road dangerous junction

Caroline joined local residents and police officers from Newington Ward, West Walworth, last week to review the junction of the Walworth Road with Penrose Street with Southwark Council traffic officers.

Caroline Pidgeon, the Liberal Democrats London Transport Spokesperson, has joined Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington, and local Councillors John Keys, John Leach and Jenny Slark to campaign to get Beddington's X26 bus stop back.

Caroline helped to launch the campaign with Tom Brake MP at the Plough in Beddington on Monday 24th November.

Norman Baker MP and Caroline Pidgeon AM - on the tube at night

Lib Dems Caroline Pidgeon AM and Norman Baker MP spent over 4 hours looking at works on the London Underground at night in November.

The visit included looking at escalator replacements works at Swiss Cottage, going deep down an underground tunnel at Chalk Farm to see sleeper replacement works and finally to Waterloo to see extensive station refurbishment. Norman even had a go at removing a wooden sleeper with a pneumatic drill! Caroline and Norman chatted to staff to fully understand the scale of works that go on at night on the Underground and how this is done in the most efficient way.

Caroline welcomes scrapping of the western congestion zone

Commenting on the news that the Mayor of London Boris Johnson is to scrap the western extension of the Congestion Charge zone, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member and Transport spokesperson Caroline Pidgeon said:

"It is good that that this ill-conceived idea will be abandoned. The western extension of the Congestion Charge zone encouraged thousands of residents to drive into central London, putting the original scheme at risk.

Lib Dems meet London's Polish community

Liberal Democrat London Assembly Members Caroline Pidgeon, Dee Doocey and Mike Tuffrey hosted a meeting for London's Polish community on Monday evening. As well as Assembly members, guest speakers included Nick Clegg MP, leader of the Liberal Democrats and the Mayor of Islington Council Cllr Stefan Kasprzyk.

Footbridge returns to North Sheen station

Commenting on the news that North Sheen rail station is to have its pedestrian footbridge restored by Network Rail so that it serves both sides of the Manor Road crossing, Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon, the Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson at the London Assembly, said:

"I am delighted to have been able to work with Susan Kramer and the local Lib Dem Councillors to get top rail people together in Richmond for a summit to thrash out the issues. This is great news for local people and will stop people risking their lives just to get a train.

Action on Vauxhall taxi touting

Caroline recently held an action meeting at Vauxhall Cross with local Lib Dem Cllr Rob Banks and a representative from Viva Vauxhall Residents’ Association. Representatives from Transport for London (TfL), the police and the Public Carriage Office (PCO) attended to talk about the issue of taxi touting in the area and to come up with an action plan to try to tackle this nuisance and dangerous issue.

The following actions were agreed:

TfL will clarify police powers under the Road Traffic Act 1998 to seize motor vehicles being driven without valid insurance;
TfL will explore the options of changing the use of the taxi parking places on South Lambeth Place to accommodate Private Hire Vehicle (licensed mini-cabs) drop off and pick up;
PCO to advise on good practice in other areas such as in Kingston town centre to see if we can persuade Lambeth Council to adopt suitable solutions;
TfL to establish a problem solving group to tackle taxi touting in Vauxhall. Members to include the local police safer neighbourhoods team; PCO; Metropolitan Police Service cab enforcement unit; local resident representatives; local Private Hire operators.
